Our first trip with Chloe was last year when we went to Cancun to celebrate my birthday. I remember all the research I made prior to taking the plane with her. Fast forward to now, we’ve road-tripped, taken the plane with her several times, and we’re feeling like pros 😜. Traveling with a baby can be daunting sometimes, but I think we’ve gathered enough experience to share with others these 10 tips!
Takeoff and Landing
If you’re travelling with a newborn or baby that is still breastfed, don’t hesitate to feed her during takeoff and landing. It will help prevent her ears to be pop. 💥
Car Seat and Stroller Travel Bag:
Protect your car seat. Airlines do provide giant clear plastic bags for your car seat, but it’s not fun to arrive at your destination and see the plastic bag has come undone and your car seat has been collecting all the dirt it could come in contact with!
Also, most airlines will allow you to check a stroller and car seat for free. Bring your stroller! It will make checking in at the airport easier.
Baby Carrier:
This is a must if your baby is not yet walking! One can think that bringing the stroller would suffice, but NO! When you check the stroller at the gate, once you’ve arrived at your destination, the stroller might be waiting for you with all the checked bags. So that means, you have to go through the long lines of immigration, carrying your baby, your carryons, etc. I don’t go to the gym enough to be able to manage all of that, so a baby carrier is a lifesaver! Trust me! Also the baby carrier becomes handy in places where the stroller might not be practical, for example at the beach or in some museums.
Snacks:
Bring some snacks along with you to the airport. They will definitely be handy when you are waiting to catch your flight or even in the plane for your little one to munch on. 😋
Books/toys:
Just as you need some entertainment during the flight, your baby will too. A book or new toy is just what the doctor ordered. 😉
Seat selection:
If your child is seating on your lap for the flight, choose a seat that would be convenient for you two. It could be the aisle seating- for easier access to the bathroom, or Club Class seating- for the added space.
Antibacterial Wipes:
Airports and planes are full of germs. Babies love putting their hands in their mouth. Bring some antibacterial travel sized wipes and wipe down the entertainment screen, arm rest, tray table. Whatever is within reach of your baby, wipe it down!
Changing pad:
As mentioned in the previous point, planes are germ fest! Don’t forget your changing pad, as well as your antibacterial wipes when you go change your baby!
Baby medicine:
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Not that you’re “calling” sickness upon your child, but it’s best to be prepare when you’re in a foreign country. Bring calamine lotion or hydro-cortisone cream to treat mosquito bites; bug repellent, Infant painkillers to lower a fever or ease pain, thermometer, band aid and any prescription medicine your child is taking.
Schedule stops (road trips):
If you are road tripping with your baby, schedule in advance your stop where baby will be able to eat, and stretch his little legs! 🙂
